In my opinion, I share the same thought as the author that tuition is only complementing and not substituting the conventional education. Process of learning relies so much on the normal schooling even since the olden days in human development. The bound between the learner with the learning mates and the educator is one unique practice, which could never be found in any so called tuition classes nowadays that focus more on individual improvement. For example in school, students not only learning knowledge from the books, but they are also absorbing different skills from the surrounding, getting more exposure in a bigger community and shaping their own character at the same time. Tuition classes do not significantly provide these chances.

Being a school teacher and a tutor before personally, I noticed that majority of tuition classes are filled with good students, who actually do not need any tuition. And as a matter of fact, this has been clearly pointed out by the author in his article, too. Only a small portion of these students showed weakness in studies. And yet, tuition classes nowadays are more focusing on helping those good students to score better, instead of really providing assistance for those who are weak. In fact, those who are week often got cast out or forbidden for not performing. This scenario is upsetting.

The author has mentioned that “our schools are full of temporary teachers of questionable qualifications”. For this point, I would rather say that these temporary teachers or even some of the professional teachers are not being sent to the correct place to teach. And the education ministry should be responsible for that. According to report, many disproportionate teachers from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK, Malay language based primary schools) were sent to Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan (SRK, Chinese/Tamil Language based primary schools) to teach. As a result, these teachers are not able to conduct class in the appropriate language and hence affected the overall education routine. And this even happened during the allocation of temporary teachers after recruitment. So I think we cannot fully blame the schools for having too many temporary teachers or teachers with questionable qualifications.

According to survey, Malaysian parents spend an enormous amount of money on their children’s tuition fees each year. Most of the students who attended tuition classes actually do not need any. The reason they go for tuition is just to get better scores in their studies. Under our exam-driven education system, most students and parents are afraid of losing to others. Our schools are still incapable of meeting the demand of smart students aiming for better results. Due to insufficient manpower in the teaching industry, most schools are full of temporary teachers, who have questionable qualifications. Hence, parents became more magnetized by the power of tuition for their children to score well in studies and exams. Academically, tutors teach their own curriculum much faster than normal school syllabus. So, with this “faster & ahead” thought, some students challenge their school teachers by saying that what they’ve learned from their tutors is more capable. And yet, by looking from another angle, tuition actually lend a hand, too. Its one-to-one approach is far more efficient than the normal one-to-many method adopt in the conventional classroom. Besides, tuition classes help most of the working parents to curb their children’s exposure to other undesirable distractions out there. Above all, the implausible impression of “professional tuition” should not exist to interfere with the true meaning of schooling and degrade the professionalism of school teachers.

Basically, tuition is an essential part of education but it is not all and it could not do all. It is just a complementary role instead of substitutive. Thus, to make a student better-equipped, tutors should come up with a more complementing syllabus that works analogously with the school curriculum. Besides, parents should not deceive their children by over-focusing on the effect of tuition. While monitoring the growth of tuition centers, the education ministry should review the existing education policy by looking at the matter seriously. More effort should be made to convince the parents in school education. While expecting consolidated ties with the parents, the ministry should also continue to introduce more teaching resources and improve the school’s diversification towards a more holistic education development.

It was published in the Daily’s Online English Portal under “Opinions” section. This article deeply asserts that tuition can never replace the customary education. It clearly portraits the present phenomenon among the related parties in the issue, such as the parents, students, tuition centers and government. Other than that, the author also states the pros and cons of the existence of tuition centers in the society. It also suggests the methods of rectifying as well as the roles, which could be played and done by the people involved.
